Wigan based SSP Health, the largest independently owned federated GP network in the North West, is kicking off its 20th anniversary celebrations by marking some apprenticeship milestones during National Apprenticeship Week 2022.

Having taken on more than 20 apprentices in recent years, the business is celebrating the tenth anniversary of two of its former apprentices who joined SSP Health in 2012 as Apprentice Receptionist/Administrators. The business will also see three more Kickstart apprentices joining the team in 2022.

Joss Dixon, from Newton le Willows, started at SSP Health 10 years ago after leaving school and wanting to be a mechanic. But after seeing his sister fulfill a rewarding apprenticeship at SSP Health, he took the plunge and he has since worked in a variety of different roles before taking up his current position as Support Officer in the Head Office in Wigan.

Taking on an apprenticeship With SSP health was the best decision I ever made. The variety is what really sets apprenticeships apart. You get to experience every element of the organisation while also furthering your education and gaining new skills.

Kerry White from Wigan joined SSP Health over 12 years ago starting at Ashton Medical Centre in the administration department. Having been a data manager, practice manager, regional manager and now service development manager, her progression shows what apprentices can do in organisations like SSP.

Kerry comments “Apprenticeships show that you don’t always need to have a university education to progress and that there are always different career options for young people from any walk of life. I started at SPP Health as an admin after leaving school and the support and training I received from day one is what made it so appealing.

Dr Shikha Pitalia, GP and Founder of SSP Health said “Apprenticeships aren’t simply an exciting pathway to a quality career for those taking up the role. They have huge benefits for organisations too. Individuals such as like Joss and Kerry show what value apprentices can bring to an organisation. I would strongly recommend an apprenticeship programme to any employer looking to grow – it provides practical and meaningful opportunities for the next generation and builds a loyal and committed staff.”
